Aspartame Rumors Unfounded
"If you have spent anytime online, chances are you have stumbled on Web sites with screaming headlines and well written text attempting to scare Internet surfers about artificial sweeteners, especially Aspartame (NutraSweet), which is alleged by these doomsayers to cause all sorts of maladies, including methanol toxicity, vision problems, headaches, fatigue, brain cancer, lupus, and even multiple sclerosis. In fact, with the last year, millions of people have reported receiving ominous, official looking email messages about aspartame's alleged hazards."

Let me give you a little history on the studies of aspartame so you can understand why it was passed.
·In 1964 a group of scientists was hired by GD Searle and Company to find a drug to help with stomach ulcers. During experiments, a scientist got powder on his fingers from a flask. Later while looking through documents, he licked his finger to turn the pages and noticed the sweet taste it produced. This is how aspartame was discovered.
·In 1970 GD Searle hired Dr. Harry Weisman, a biochemist, to do a study on the artificial sweetener. Less than a year later he died suddenly, and the study was terminated. Makes you wonder if it was due to prolonged exposure to aspartame!
·For eight years the FDA would not approve aspartame due to health reasons brought up in other studies.
·There have been 164 official studies on aspartame. 74 of those done by industries associated with aspartame. 100% of those studies showed no problems. 90 studies were done by industries with no association to aspartame industries. 92% of those studies showed MAJOR problems.
·The FDA Commissioner made the decision to pass aspartame despite warnings of danger from FDA investigators and toxicologists.
·The Public Board of Inquiry made up of scientists, including the President of American Association of Neuropathologists, voted unanimously against approval of aspartame because “brain tumor data was too worrisome”.
·The National Soft Drink Association even rallied against use of aspartame.
·After the FDA Commissioner approved aspartame for carbonated beverages, he took a consulting position with the marketing firm owned by GD Searles (maker of aspartame) at a salary of $1000/day.
Now if the FDA says it's ok to consume aspartame, why have thousands of health stores banned products with aspartame in it, and why does aspartame claim 75% of the FDA's complaints on their Adverse Monitoring System (since 1981)?

I call B.S. You don't actually know anything about this, you're just regurgitating information that you found on some kook's web page. Why don't you give specifics for some of those 90 studies that found 'major problems' with aspartame? What journal were they published in? Who performed them?

I avoid diet pop regardless. Until more studies come out, I believe all present data is inconclusive. I do not wish to take any unnecessary risks. I drink regular pop sparingly, and I'm completely fine with that.

Aspartame bull crap
Look, ever hear of a catalyst. What happens when you drink diet soda with aspartame and combined with a lunch of tomato sauce, pasta, salad dressing, and butter on a roll. The fact is, all those compositions change once they are in your stomach. So all this talk about aspartame converting to some lethal chemical in the body is bull crap. NOT ONE STUDY did this becasue they know their study won't hold up. So when you mix diet soda and lets say tofu, followed by balsamic vinegar, do you think the aspartame stays the same? No, it's all chemical reactions and mixtures. I want to see a study that shows me the chemical composition of aspartame and break it down into those LETHAL chemicals once it's been mixed with all different foods and other liquids. They won't do it, and can't. So I'm going to keep drinking diet soda. When you take grapefruit juice with certain blood pressure medications, do you know what happens? The juice actually changes the effective composition of some blood pressure drugs. Same deal with Aspartame, the so called experts won't touch a study like this

I would rather stick with sugar - used sparingly of course.
